Director's Note

Lewis Carroll wrote, “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”

Alice in Wonderland is a classic for a reason. I’ve yet to meet someone who hasn’t heard of it and/or seen one of the many screen adaptations. Most have a favorite character: the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts or the White Rabbit to name a few. And there are as many iterations of scripts as there are literary interpretations of and tributes to Carroll’s original novels. I think my favorite thing about Alice in Wonderland truly is just how many takes there are. The mere fact that a story written 160 years ago is clearly still very relevant today. It is still being dissected for nuance and reinterpreted with new twists and themes. Most seem to agree that Alice highlights the connection between childhood and curiosity, wonder, and imagination. I further submit, that if these Wonderland characters, who seem to treat Alice so callously, are the example of what growing up means…it is no wonder many adults find themselves tiring of “adulting” so frequently and so many children want to rush to grow up. But if we wait, until the end, and hear what the Cheshire Cat says, that it is all in good fun, and we watch Alice choose to return home, hopefully with understanding and Wonder in her heart, well how can that not leave us full of hope? I certainly hope the truth is that Wonderland can live within us all. That we can find joy in the simple, strength in the ordinary, humor in the mundane, and maybe most importantly: kindness, in abundance, all around…if only we choose to see it.

Thank you for coming today, thank you for supporting the arts in your community and these talented people who love putting on shows for you! I always say there is no show without an audience, so the most important person in this program…is you!
